About Us

LP Statile was started in 1922, and has grown to become central New Jersey’s largest wholesale-only nursery.

With two locations, Springfield and Colts Neck, covering over 80 acres we service contractors throughout the tri-state region. We stock over 100,000 plants at our two facilities. Roughly 80% are purchased from growers throughout the country, the other 20% we grow at our Colts Neck facility. All plants are above ground - and ready to sell, no digging is required.

History

Early last century Leonardo Statile immigrated to New Jersey from Italy. He worked as a propagator for Elizabeth Nursery and then for F&F Nurseries. He soon purchased the existing property on Mountain Avenue in Springfield to start his own nursery.

Springfield Nursery started as a propagation/ production nursery growing broadleaf evergreens, specializing in Azaleas and Hybrid Rhododendron.

Leonardo’s son, Philip, not only grew up on the nursery - he was actually born at the nursery. After attending Rutgers and serving in WW2, Philip joined the business full time. Soon thereafter William Doland, a brother-in-law, joined Philip and Leonardo in the family business. Phil and Bill continued the business after Leonardo’s death in 1956.

Springfield Nurseries continued to prosper with Phil and family living on one side of the property, and Bill and family on the other.

Leonard P. Statile, Phil’s son, graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Landscape Architecture in 1972. After working in Westchester as a Landscape Architect, he saw an opportunity for a horticultural distribution center in Springfield. In 1974 L.P. Statile, Inc. was formed to service landscape contractors with all their plant material needs.

As Phil and Bill approached retirement age, Leonard was named President of Springfield Nursery and upon their final retirement acquired the assets and the company is now known as L.P. Statile. In addition, Statile Nurseries was formed to grow plants for sale at LP Statile. Statile Nurseries has over 75 acres in production.

Philip L. Statile, Leonard’s son, joined the company full time after achieving a Business Management Degree from Seton Hall University. Philip grew up in the business and started from the ground up while in elementary and high school. After college he was encouraged to work outside the family business and did so gaining much work experience. He has returned to head up our customer service department while learning all facets of the business.

As we welcome the fourth generation, L.P. Statile and Statile Nurseries continue to look for solid growth opportunities to keep us strong in the next century, we thank you for your continued support.
